EHDI you have failed the EAFD screening

In a sense we have come to our nation’s capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked “insufficient funds.” But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. So we have come to cash this check — a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice. We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. and so while we r not having a march on the capitol this weekend – we did have one in the capitol of Oralism and Audism – St Louis – to say howdy to the EHDI folks and the “specialists” and “professionals” and the corporations and the agencies and associations (see EHDI 2012 sponsors list) and the institutions and the parents
good social change has been a DIRECT result of Direct Confrontation – peaceful of course.  always peaceful on the part of the protesters – on the part of the oppressors – well, not so much but that is the primary purpose of civil disobedience and peaceful resistance – to expose unjust systems – to have them pull down their own masks for all to see so that the systematic oppression becomes more visible and thus can be challenged and changed

Women marched, petitioned, debated, challenged, lobbied, got spat upon, got manhandled, got arrested and engaged in a hunger strike – See Iron Jawed Angels

African-Americans marched, petitioned, debated, challenged, lobbied, sued, got arrested and beat upon and water hosed and attacked by attack dogs and homes burned and churches bombed – see many films about the Civil Rights Movement such as The Children’s March http://www.tolerance.org/magazine/number-27-spring-2005/announcing-childrens-march

Native Americans, Asian Americans, and Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender folks have done the same (Stonewall Rebellion and on and THANK YOU PRESIDENT OBAMA – me so happy.  And no worries all those anti-GLBT bigots can try to use their $ and unjust ways to get u out of the white house but we on the move now.  ya stood by the CREED of this COUNTRY over politiking and its a beautiful sight to behold)

Peaceful direct confrontation is what ya gotta do to make the invisibleness of the PREJUDICE visible and this is why we STAND and this is why they try to split Deaf&Ally folks up and pit them against each other – so we wont be indivisible in our quest to make things visible

so since we are truthseekers we say unto the Early Hearing Detection & Intervention system you have failed the EAFD screening

EHDI really should be Early Healthy Deaf Identity but that is just way too egalitarian + equality of condition for them to consider just yet but we helping them inch their way in that direction – the direction of that which is right, just, good and true.

In March, we marched and came to see how ya do things and are sorry to inform you that your baby (EHDI) has not passed the Early Audism-Free Detection Test (EAFD) and we gotta do an Intervention.

Your baby (EHDI) has failed and had to be referred to the specialists for further testing to see just how bad it is.  And after several test of peaceful engagement – you have been diagnosed to be suffering from profound audism.

So I’m sorry to say your baby (EHDI) has failed yet again.  I know that you are sad to learn this but the majority of American people instinctively know that it is wrong to deny a Deaf child the right to a fully accessible language via American Sign Language.  The fact that you can not comprehend nor accept this true fact is abnormal and will prevent you from being able to function normally, successfully, independently and humanely within a democracy cuz ur work thus far has been biased in favor of injustice.  And that is not cool, EHDI & co.

But do not despair.

We are happy to announce there is a cure for your affliction of audism.  And the cure is known as truth force / soul force.

The truth – the truth will set you free as will love

so we r lovingly here to tell you some truths: (yes this is an Intervention Dear EHDI & Co.)

Truths:

– there really is no use in trying to say you have a handful of Deaf people on a planning committee out of 19 when we know you make all the final decisions and psst…

4 – 5 out of 19 is pathetic.

FOR THE TEST on “balanced and unbiased” – WE ARE SORRY TO SAY YOU HAVE FAILED

– you tried to minimize the FACT that EHDI 2012 only has 1 presentation out of over 100 with the word ASL in the title, you did a word search by keying in the word “sign” and “deaf” or looked for presenters who had requested an ASL interpreter and got a few more hits

<20 out of over 100 presentations allowing the mention of ASL&English and/or using ASL&English is abysmal and UNbalanced

Your bias is busted

– trying to portray it as a just, right and good thing is simply bad math and bad science.  We may be Deaf but we aint dumb, sir.

we been sold that promissory note before

ya can spin it to say – well more presentations about bilingualism-biculturalism should have been submitted.  HA – spin baby spin.  The burden is on your end to seek out such good stuff.  Like why the heck wasn’t the smart folks at Gallaudet’s LV2 invited to be keynote instead of the bloke saying genetics are the new frontier to purge us from the problems of Deaf folks?

ya FAILED

given the FACT that ASL and bilingualism has been oppressed and suppressed in the US of A (See Baynton’s Forbidden Signs: American Culture and the Campaign Against Sign Language and many other scholarly publications), it really is beholden upon the EHDI conference and entire system to make ASL+English more visible so that their claims of being balanced and unbiased might actually have the appearance of being true.

selecting a few here and there aint gonna cut it.  having ASL+English mentioned here and there after all the pathological and medical stuff is not gonna cut it.  Criticizing studies about the value and merits of baby signs for Hearing babies while not criticizing some of the very lame-o studies re: AVT+CI is totally showing a BIAS.  YES Dr. Karl White we totally see what you are up to.  My goodness and your badness.  Ya know on a scale of 1 to 5 you are rating in the negatives.  Be a good bloke and fight for everybody – not just the oral / aural fixation for the fix it up nation cuz… Bio diversity is a must and Deaf folks are NOT going away – no matter how hard you work at it.  If you really want Deaf folks to be part of the family table – put some of your work towards getting ASL&English into the homes of the families.  Yeah the Obertokker family and AG Bell might not likey but HEY re-read MLK’s message at top and remember George Washington’s words of “to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance.”

Back to the EHDI 2012 Conference and the failing of the EAFD test

– you put the only bilingual booth all the way at the END of the exhibition stretch

– and while i understand that folks who have not registered for the conference didnt have the right to go into the exhibit space and NO ONE FROM AFA EVEN TRIED – i do not understand why you corralled a Deaf man who left the DBC table to come out and talk with us back into the booth area.  Doesn’t this Deaf bloke have freedom of movement, of personhood, and liberty – when folks register for your conference does that put them under your thumb and mean you can PHYSICALLY restrict their movements and socialization – WOW!

Seriously Dr. White – what is up with that.  There’s more – there is much much more.  Like how you said that EHDI 101 could not be made open to the public when it always had been in the past

Or how you slinked up to EDHI conference folks in the Marriott Hotel bar to whisper in their ears that you were closing down the bar and establishing a new locale so they wouldnt have to sit amongst the large group of Deaf&Allie folks who had gathered to discuss good stuff like justice and equality (note – many of those in the circle were also EHDI conference attendees but you didnt seem to concerned about them – odd eh?)

Dr. Karl despite your trying to make St. Louis be about you – it really isn’t.  Its about the system of which we are learning you are a major part of.  but not the all of it

Its about the truth and getting the truth out –

THE TRUTH – there is no harm in ASL and there is plenty of harm in Oralism (oral  / aural only).  See the Lies AG Bell Told My Parents campaign

One man, upon seeing EHDI’s audism up close and personal in St Louis (Dr. Karl White telling another Deaf man to “behave” when he wasn’t doing nothin’ accept trying to get into the pre-conference EHDI 101 session that he was registered for), remarked:  “I am glad to be here to witness this.  I never thought i would see something like this.” The witness, a survivor of CID of St Louis, was shaking his head sadly at how little the system thinks of us and how free speech and assembly and just ole walking around was severely restricted by the EHDI conference leader, Dr. White.  Oppression is not pretty

Bearing witness and telling truths – this is how ya get injustices to end and justices to emerge.  this is how u cash in on that promissory note – not by enabling the oppressors by pretending everything is OK when it aint and not by getting angry and mean and not by ignoring.  Just by loving urself and ur people enough to STAND and say – we are here and this here EHDI is utterly imbalanced in favor of an exclusionary method and the falsehood that its bad to be Deaf

so we say ¡Ya basta!

no worries – the treatment for your affliction is very humane unlike the treatments EHDI pushes upon parents and schools and the real babies

The fact is there is nothing wrong with us.  I got no objection with teaching speech and audition as long as it is done humanely.  I have MAJOR objections with OVERemphasizing the importance of speaking and listening as equaling independence when it dont and MAJOR objections with DENYING a fully natural and accessible language.  Crimes against humanity are not cool and should not be financed or sanctioned by governmental bodies.

Audism is the problem and if you believe that its bad to be Deaf then you are part of the problem.

So EHDI – the jig is up – the first step is admitting you have a problem – that you have stacked the deck in favor of a medical solution which inherently undermines and harms Deaf children’s linguistic, cultural, social, and psychological development and puts a wedge between child and parents resulting in estrangement.

It’s time to mend your ways and right your wrongs and tell parents the truth.  its ok to be Deaf and ASL&English do not harm

I promise ya – when u begin to put this truth front and center – you will TRULY begin to do your job which is to detect if a newborn and/or child is Deaf and to ensure they do not suffer any adverse impacts from audism (which includes paternalism, linguicism, ableism, and phonocentrism)

Now is the time to lift our nation from the quick sands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. ~ MLK

Racial injustice includes discrimination based on ethnicity and Deaf ASL folks r an ethnic group (See Lane, Pillard, and Hedberg People of the Eye) – trying to deprive the babies of their ethnicity is not gonna solve YOUR problem – just delays it from coming to a head.

Head in the right direction EHDI – work the steps and work for social justice and equality by ensuring that ASL&English is part of the “I” in intervention.

A bell that rings true

While i am not a huge fan of AG Bell and co. because of all the harm, destruction and oppression that has resulted from the oral / aural ONLY onslaught – i do know of a bell that i appreciate.  Bell hooks – she is an Black feminist Buddhist scholar, activist, and community member.  She rocks.

Ella Mae Lentz’s discussion of bell hook’s book on Critical Thinking and Alison Aubrecht & Ryan Commerson’s mention of bell’s Teaching to Transgress book in their “Transgressing the Object”- new Butterfly Effect Series (text / video) has got me remembering the first bell hook’s book i ever read – Killing Rage:Ending Racism by bell hooks

i dont understand or agree with all she has written but lots and lots of her stuff leap off the page into my eyes, my heart, and my soul to say ahh THAT – that is what is going on, that is what is going down, that is comin’ a round.

And as like many other STRONG women – when i finally saw a video with her, i was like wow she is so soft spoken and cherry cherry looking.  It reminded me of when i first saw Dr. Tove Skutnabb-Kangas who is a GREAT advocate and scholar re: multilingualism and mutliculturalism and biodiversity.  I saw Tove present at Gallaudet and her power point was filled to the brim with text stating clearly and boldly facts and truths about linguicism, language rights and human rights and how they are interconnected while she herself was quietly presenting these facts wrapped in a shawl with biofocials on and her hair up in a bun.  Too cute.  It was just such a contrast – these pow pow pow truths -and this wee woman singing them for all with eyes open to see.

Its very cool to see some folks who are so AWAKE, AWARE, and ACTIVE

Its also cool to see they are super sweet folks – not crazy fanatic extremists.

When folks see Susan Dupor, De’VIA artist famous for “The Family Dog,” or Dr. Betty G. Miller, Mother of De’VIA and famous for “Ameslan Prohibited,” or Dr. Paddy Ladd who introduced the concept and construct of Deafhood – they are like “THAT is Susan Dupor?  THAT is Betty G. Miller?  That is Paddy Ladd?”  Its like they were expecting someone in camouflage carrying an AKA when these folks r pacifists and sweethearts.  They are just truth seekers.  and for some folks that is mighty scary and threatening.

so since a new bell (rather than AG Bell)  is on me mind today – i thought id share a few of her quotes that ring true.  bold added by me and my pov under each.

When she references race and racism, you can substitute in Deaf and audism and/or sex and sexism, class and classism etc

From Killing Rage:Ending Racism by bell hooks

“We experience the world as infinitely less hostile to blackness than it actually is.  This shift happens particularly as we buy into liberal individualism and see our individual fate as black people in no way linked to the collective fate.  It is this link that sustains full awareness of the daily impact of racism on black people, particulary its hostile and brutal assualt.”  p. 17

i think she is talking about denial and the me, me, me generation folks.  If we acknowledge the oppression of Deaf folks, of Black folks, of GLBT folks, of Deaf Black GLBT folks …. etc then we r required to think of the greater good and doing good.  If we minimize, deny, ignore, scapegoat, displace etc oppression then we can just look to ourselves and not attempt collective solutions.

“Racial hatred is real.  And it is humanizing to be able to resist it with militant rage.”

i think she is saying – righteous anger is just, right and good.  Racial hatred is real.  Audism is real.  What makes us human and humane is resisting those hatreds and discriminatory practices and mindsets with a righteous anger.  This does NOT mean to act in violent means but rather to be firm with love and truths.  Remember she has studied Buddhism so she is not calling for violent action but rather righteous anger to take the form of peaceful resistance.

Forgetfulness and denial enable masses of privileged black people to live the “good life” without ever coming to terms with black rage.”  p. 17

this is why folks say “move on” and AG Bell says ” We should teach them to forget that they are deaf.”  Forget, deny, and close ur eyes.  Its a lullaby for the disenfranchised courtesy of the oppressors.  “Trust in me…” they sing as they slither

“Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh teaches that self-recovery is ultimately about learning to see clearly.  The political process of decolonization is also a way for us to learn to see clearly.  It is the way to freedom for both the colonized and the colonizer.” p. 18

Well, hello – this is where i be at – i have begun to see more and more clearly.  It is slow going sometimes and surely some times i no like what i see but i have found it to be very true that when we assert our somebodyness and reclaim our birth rights, it is freeing for the colonized and the colonizer.

“What does our rage at injustice mean if it can be silenced, erased by individual material comfort?  If aware black folks gladly trade in their critical political consciousness for opportunistic personal advancement then there is no place for rage and no hope that we can ever live to see the end of white supremacy.” p. 19

if folks will be so easily lead to buy into the system for personal gain – they will not experience any indignation at injustice and thus will not STAND up and if they have self-silenced to get along and get opportunities and get by then there is no hope for progress and equality.

“It is the telling our history that enables political self-recovery.” p. 47

this is why folks tell us to move on – they do not want us to discover, examine, share and celebrate our own history because they do not want political self-recovery.

“Black people still feel the terror, still associate it with whiteness, but are rarely able to articulate the varied ways we are terrorized because it is easy to silence by accusations of reverse racism or by suggesting that black folks who talk about the ways we are terrorized by whites are merely evoking victimization to demand special treatment.”  p. 47

this is why you will see many Deaf folks from all walks of life venting in safe circles but when in positions of power or amongst the folks that oppress they say little or nothing of the oppression and terror they have felt at the hands of the SYSTEMS – for fear of being accused of reverse audism or playing the victim card.  Don’t even get me started on horizontal violence.

Critically examining the association of whiteness as terror in the black imagination, deconstructing it, we both name racism’s impact and help to break its hold.  We decolonize our minds and our imaginations.”  P. 50

this is why Deaf artistic and literary expressions are so important – they speak truths.  They are our visual testimonies and shout outs and they allow our imaginations / creativity to not be colonized by fear and terror.

some day may we all ring a bell of truth – in doing so we bring ourselves and our commUNITY one step closer to equality, justice, and freedom

and now i have to figure out how to respond to our daughter’s inquiry – “hey, mom why arent u at occupy wallstreet”

gotta look into how i can act locally as i have definitely been thinking globally

Ain’t it strange how Joey becomes estranged from his teacher who used to sign but was ordered not to and how he became a bit estranged from his parents for not fighting harder for what he needed?

A family, a funeral, and a falsehood
“My mama did told me not to come for  Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter + July 4, while her 2 deaf granddaughter (my deaf nieces) are around for many years because she said that she did not want them to learn how to use ASL from me, my Deaf husband + my deaf son. She said that ___________for the Deaf did told my brother about not to social with me +my family.  So often my dad did begged me to come while I had to quietly + tolerably still love my mama.
I feel so estranged aunt to my 2 Deaf nieces! I don’t want them to blame on their gramma (my mom). But my other hearing nephews + nieces did really helpful by their effort communicated and hugging me, my hubsband (their Deaf Uncle) + their cousin, my Deaf son!
My other brothers and sister in laws had been telling me not to be stranger to them. I tried so hard my best for NOT making them blame on my mama!
At my dad’s recent  funeral, my mama was so cold to me but I tried my best to love her. Seeing my 2 deaf nieces were like stranger to me because I’m their stranger aunt. I feel so HURT for being “estrange” Aunt to my Deaf nieces for so many years!!! I will pray to help me to be patience by waiting and giving my mama more time to welcome me in her heart.
Thank you so much for your moment to read my personal msg and also I know that I’m not the only one who feel stranger because there are few Deaf people who do not know their Deaf Uncles and Aunts.   I hope that some Deaf babies, Deaf Uncles, Deaf Aunts and Deaf cousins will not be stranger to each other in the future.   Hope to see you in Washington DC on between July 21 to 23.”

so why would i be attracted to this song “Why We Fight” by the Decemberists?

Well cuz it came under my radar when someone created a video using images
specific to the fight for Deaf Equality and i thought cool beans. (scroll down for the link to the video)   There has been a war against ASL and other natural signed languages for a mighty long time folks – Before and After ICED Milan 1880 and AG Bell.  See Dr. Douglas Baynton’s Forbidden Signs: American Culture and the Campaign Against Sign Language and Dr. Lane’s When the Mind Hears and his Mask of Benevolence for ample evidence of the systematic attempt at linguistic and cultural gencoide against Deaf folks in the U S of A.  See Edwin Black’s War Against the Weak.

Yes, i am recommending u get ye self to a library and read a BOOK by a true Dr. versus some pseudo doctor / guru / 2nd coming revelation wanna be or lame a## pundits spouting out b.s. as facts and getting it carried on Deaf aggregators.  You can even check out AG Bell (the man) own writings or the association’s Volta Review – they have not been shy about their aim, desire, ambition to remove ASL from the hands of wee things and to caral all the Deaf children into the sink-or-swim stream of life.  They proclaim their cochlear implant & AVT revolution with great pride and strides.

Come attrition

– check out how AG Bell Assoc and co. aim to make it so Deaf kids dont even know they are Deaf

– check out how Graeme Clark (founder of Cochlear Australia) aims for 100% implantation of all Deaf babies and children (get them before they can resist)

– check out the stats in Denmark 

– see the mainstreaming mandate (the creations of solitaires in society)

– see the remote control CIs turned off and on by parents, teachers, and professionals

– see stem cells and genetic engineering

– see the competition for a 100% implantable cochlear implant

Re: the reek of bones – see CI surgery and yes despite a representative of Cochlear Americas trying to give us the impression that the implant is all just under the skin and no biggy until i said “they do DRILL through the skull” and her colleague (a graduate of Gallaudet, former interpreter, and former audiologist but now marketing person at CA did confirm the fact that there is a drilling through the bone) Not to mention all the wracking of the knuckles with the ruler during the reign of Oralism (oral / aural ONLY mandate)

re: Hell – ask ANY Deaf person who has endured hearing test, cold earmolds, audiotory training, speech lessons, AVT , etc etc and they will say it was Hell. Yep, i’s know some will say it was worth it and some love to yoddle (i do too) but i dont know one who said it was fun being TRAINED.   We aint dogs folks.

– dont demote and degrade a TRUE language to a systems of gestures and mimes – geez that AG Bell-like Italian Oral / Aural ONLY association – we see u! 

– dont appoint three utterly UNqualified board members for a bilingual-bicultural Deaf school.  Not only do these folks support and patronize programs that EXCLUDE ASL from the life of a Deaf child, they have the audacity to tell the Deaf community – we dont care what you think, know or want – we are staying put.  Wow Wee.  We shall see see.

– dont think u can fool us by chopping off the “without sign language or lipreading” in your AVT guidelines but still practice the hiding of lips and banning of visual acuity and sign language in your THERAPETIC practices!

– dont think u can fool us by silently removing Cochlear Americas and Advanced Bionics from your Circle Alliance founders partnership but still have them be major sponsors for your conferenes. 

– dont think we dont see all your lobbying efforts in various state legislatures to mandate insurance coverage for the VERY expensive and UNreliable cochlear implants and a push to route the parents and babes to the oral / aural ONLY track via EHDI and other efforts

– dont think we dont see you setting up oral / aural only professionals training programs all over the country

– dont think we dont see you trying to rip down all the pillars of the Deaf community

They have new weapontry now and their aim may be more aggressive but their mark is the same.  Mouths and ears.  Its all about speaking and listening to make u (in)dependent.  truly – think on it folks – it requires all the kings horse and all the kings men to try to restore the wee thing back to a “natural” state via UNnatural means and still most folks return to the fold – they come with REGRET, with UPSET, with ANGER – why wasnt i given natural signed language as a pup – why did i have to forever work for my words – why doesnt anyone in may family even learn to sign NOW NOW NOW after i have done all the labor of jumping through all the hoops to meet them on their side of the bridge – why wont they venture just a wee bit in my direction so im not forever having to work for my words – why cant i ever get a measure of equality of condition?

The infantry and the achers r mighty big boys these days folks ohhh and they are wealthy and comfy – dont get all worried that we is picking on them.  they r doing just fine, driving nice cars, having big houses, nice portfolios, etc, they be fine.

Oppressed people cannot remain oppressed forever. The yearning for freedom eventually manifests itself, and that is what has happened to the American Negro. Something within has reminded him of his birthright of freedom, and something without has reminded him that it can be gained. Consciously or unconsciously, he has been caught up by the Zeitgeist, and with his black brothers of Africa and his brown and yellow brothers of Asia, South America and the Caribbean, the United States Negro is moving with a sense of great urgency toward the promised land of racial justice. If one recognizes this vital urge that has engulfed the Negro community, one should readily understand why public demonstrations are taking place. The Negro has many pent up resentments and latent frustrations, and he must release them. So let him march; let him make prayer pilgrimages to the city hall; let him go on freedom rides -and try to understand why he must do so. If his repressed emotions are not released in nonviolent ways, they will seek expression through violence; this is not a threat but a fact of history. So I have not said to my people: “Get rid of your discontent.” Rather, I have tried to say that this normal and healthy discontent can be channeled into the creative outlet of nonviolent direct action. And now this approach is being termed extremist. The other, Jesus Christ, was an extremist for love, truth and goodness, and thereby rose above his environment. Perhaps the South, the nation and the world are in dire need of creative extremists.

As in ignoring the obvious – that it is OK to be D eaf – that at times it is even great to be D eaf (call it D eafhood, D eafnicitiy, D eaf Gain – whatever u like – it all adds up to the little ole radical notion – D eaf folks are people too! Ya hoo and we got a right to be and we be part of the TREE and linguistic and cultural genocide ain’t cool, fool – ya dig?)

Instead of arguing about the height of the D – lets argue about the last letter – shall it be “f” or “d” – your choice folks. Your OOOOOption.

so i repeat (cuz i know a lot of ya are hard of h earing. i.e. soft of d eaf. i.e. partially
d eaf. i.e. h earing impaired. and some of ya are fully functioning ear folks yet you can not h ear this call … and repetition helps. it surely helps me)
