ASL Ella discusses L.A. Action

Note: – yep you are at the People of the Eye place – i just picked a different template.  I look to do that from time to time ; ).

Ella Mae Lentz has a vlog out discussing the L.A. Actions in July.  AFA and the LA Core group will have more details and specs soon.  STAND folks cuz the 2nd wave of Oralism deserves a response.  If all ya do is #itch & moan – nothing is ever gonna get better its Not.

stand folks and love your language, your people, your posterity, and your enemies.  We can do this – the hour is late.

Is there a Dr. in the House?

In this series examining the Bermuda Triangle of Oralism in L.A. we have covered:
Point A

Advanced Bionics (a Cochlear Implant corporation outside of LA that has had numerous deaths, complications, recalls, fines, and lawsuits – the latest of which they have to pay damages of $7.25 million dollars to a family who’s daughter was shocked to the point of convulsions and vomiting)

Point B

John Tracy Clinic (a longstanding Oral / Aural Only institution devoted to indoctrinating parents and potential teachers into the doctrine of audism – the belief to hear and/or behave as a hearing person is superior to being Deaf.)

and now Point C

The House Research Institute

i.e. is there a Doctor in the House?
ABSOLUTELY.  There is.  For those of you who never heard of Dr. House as me, myself, and i had never heard of him until a couple of years ago – Dr. William House (real name and no relations to the TV show character) – was the first bloke in the US to insert electrodes into a Deaf person to stimulate their brain artificially.  You can see the video of Dr. House with his human subject – Jack Urban.  It’s not captioned and the auto caption is way way off the mark.

I first learned of Dr. House when Dr. Tom Humphries mentioned that many moons ago when he was serving on an ad hoc committee to come up with a position on Cochlear Implants, he sat across the table from Dr. House and Dr. House asked “Tom, can’t you see that I have the deaf children’s best interest at heart?”  to which Dr. Humphries replied,  “No.  I’m sorry to say this but no, you do not.”

When Dr. Humphries told this story several people in the audience reacted to the name Dr. House.  So i asked my pal who grew up in Ca. – “Dr. House?” and she said “L.A. Dr. – famous – my parents took me to him.”  and i asked my other friend who i knew grew up on the East coast but also reacted when his name was mentioned
I signed – “So Dr. House?”  She replied, “He implanted me.  I was one of the first kids to be implanted.”
and i said “oh”

wow – the things i dont know.  Yes, I knew my friend had gotten one of the first implants for children as a teenager but i didnt know anything about this Dr. House guy.

He is big as is the INSTITUTION his brother (Dr. Howard House) founded – it has gone through many name changes but it is now called the House Research Institute and it is HUGE and running in LA.  Their version of their history  at

What are they researching? Well it used to be called the House EAR Institute so …

they be researching how to make folks as unDeaf as possible.  They got $ and they also have lobbyists (lobbying re: Defense legislation? hope its not more of that Acoustic Kitty espionage bonkiness)

This is what the House Ear Institute had to say about the advent of pediatric cochlear implants. (see quote below)  Please note the absence of any mention of the courage of the CHILDREN who under went this experimental surgery and please KNOW that not all children survived.

“Although there a many reasons why cochlear implants have become as successful as they are in helping deaf people with profound hearing loss to hear sound, it is the courage and commitment of a small group of clinicians and parents of deaf children who were instrumental in the eventual success of this technology for children,” continued Eisenberg, who was an audiologist on the first pediatric cochlear implant team in 1980.

Yep.  The child who was implanted is not even worthy of being mentioned in that tribute.  “object” and “objectification” anyone?  I for one object to the treatment of children as things to be experimented on.

It is also note worthy that the AG Bell Association used to have Advanced Bionics as its banner on its website then Advanced Bionics had its cochlear implant failing hot so they POOFED IT and replaced the banner with the House Ear Institute but that got POOFED too.

hmmm – they are now easing out the name of AG Bell and playing up all things LSL (as if the selling of a clinical service as a “language” and a bigoted mentality as “independence” was gonna sell with any of the folks beyond those who depended on the myth being real – oy – such hubris and spin)

Now we see what there is to see see.

L.A. has a Bermuda Triangle of Oralism via John Tracy Clinic, Advanced Bionics and the House Research Institute and hence AG Bell Association has selected L.A. as this years LSL Symposium cite.  A G Bell, the man and the Association, have been propagating and proselytizing their unholy gospel of it must be oral / aural only by any mean means necessary for a might LONG TIME.

No worries – some good folks plan to have their feet on the ground making the invisible visible.

We all are created equal and thus should be treated as such.

Systems that resort to “by any mean means necessary” can not last.  Truth and love win – think of it always said Gandhi.

so now ya all see the pattern right – get ’em YOUNG, implant, do oral / aural only LSL, get private and public programs to do oral / aural only and when they graduate with any language deficiency blame it on the parents for not working hard enuf or not implanting young enuf or for letting them watch switched at birth or …. but NEVER NEVER question the system.  NEVER tell AG Bell, Dr. House and his Institute or John Tracy Clinic that NO THEY DO NOT IN FACT HAVE THE DEAF CHILD’s BEST INTEREST AT HEART – for if they did they could NEVER justify the unjust practice of INSTITUTIONALIZING the forbidding of a fully natural and fully accessible language from the minds of those who most desperately deserve it.

See Dr. Humphries et al. article on the Harms of Cochlear Implants and pure Oralism in terms of Language Deprivation and humanity here

Geez L.A. Bermuda Triangle of Oralism = JTC + HRI + AB = AGBAD – don’t y’all have any shame.

keep STANDing Truth Seekers.  They may run and spin and hide but we on the MOVE!

“Until justice rolls down like water and
righteousness like a mighty stream.”

So is there a Dr. in the House? – surely there are and have been more than a few.  Read about what Dr. Itard did to Claude Forestier while he was a student at the Paris Deaf School –
“a regime of daily purgatives, and his outer ear was covered with a bandage soaked in a blistering agent.  Within a few days, his ear lost all of its skin, oozed pus, and was excruciatingly painful.  When it scabbed, Itard reapplied the caustic soda to the skin behind Forestier’s ear.  All this was to no avail, no more for Forestier than for thirty other pupils on whom it was tried.” (From When the Mind Hears by Dr. Lane p. 134)

We got Drs too folks.  (Dr. Petitto, Dr. Hauser, Dr. Lane, Dr. Ladd, Dr. Cummins, Dr. Skutnabb-Kangas, Dr. Nover, Dr. Humphries, Dr. Padden, etc.)

Drs who say – not cool – depriving Deaf children of a fully natural accessible signed language in order to sacrifice them to the oral Moloch – totally not cool.  Deaf people are NOT children of a lesser god.

Bessie Veditz’ Welcome

In browsing through the 9th NAD & 3rd World’s Congress of the Deaf conference proceedings of 1910 in Colorado Springs, Co. i spy another gem – A welcome message from Mary Elizabeth “Bessie” Veditz (teacher, horticulturalist, wife of George W. Veditz and much more)

Mrs. G. W. Veditz followed with an address of welcome in behalf

of the Colorado deaf.

To the Members of the Convention and Congress:

When the great Napoleon marshalled his army before the Pyramids,
he uttered an aphorism since become famous, "Soldiers, forty
centuries look down upon you !"

We, the Colorado deaf, can say still more to you, for from the top
of our silver-capped Peak, not forty centuries, but forty ages,
look down upon us, and in all those forty ages, never has a
gathering like ours been assembled within sight of our mountains.

We are proud to have you with us. We appreciate more fully than
we can find words to say the great honor it is to be your hosts. For
years past it has been one of our dreams to entertain the N. A. D.,
the most powerful and militant organization of the deaf in our
country, and now this wish, this dream, is realized and there
is also the added honor that your President is from our
Mountain State.

Our histories tell us how whole cities and districts along the route
of march spent years in preparing to maintain the army of Xerxes,
for a single week, and after its passage were impoverished and
ruined. For the past three years the Colorado deaf have been
thinking and plan-ning to entertain you at this ninth milestone
in your own progressive march. Nor were we thinking and planning
under compulsion, but of ourown free will and with every desire
to do honor to a distinguished guest. When you leave us,
instead of being bankrupted like those poor wretched Asiatics,
we shall be enriched, for you will render far more than it is in
our power to give.

Our mountains, our passes, our canyons, our waterfalls, our caverns
are all yours. They came from God's hand and He placed them here
for you and for all men to admire.

But the welcome we give you is our own. It is as warm, as spon-
taneous as it is possible for human hearts to make it.

Friends from far and near, in the name of the Colorado deaf, I bid
you welcome.

The Buff and Blue - Obit. for George W. Veditz
Vol. 45, No. 12

Tuesday, March 30, 1937

Graduated From Gallaudet In 1884;

Former President of National

Association of The Deaf

Dispatches in the New York Times and
the Herald-Tribune brought to light for the
deaf in the East news of the death, on March"
12, of George W. Veditz, '81, former presi-
dent of the National Association of the Deaf
and a prominent figure in the education of
the deaf, at Colorado Springs, Colorado. He
died at the age of 75 years.

George Veditz was born at Baltimore, Md.,
in 1802 1861 (correction as error in the Buff & Blue),
and received his early education at
a German-English private school, which he at-
tended for three years to the time he became
deaf. In 1875 he enrolled at the Maryland
School for the Deaf after two years of being
under a private tutor. He remained there for
five years, and while at school acted as fore-
man of the printing shop for two years.

In September, 1880, he matriculated at Gal-
laudet College, entering the Freshman class and
graduating in June, 1884 with the degree of
B. A-. He was no-ted for excellency in scholar-
ship and was valedictorian of his class.

Sensing a man of rare ability, the late Dr.
Ely, Sr., then superintendent at the Maryland
-School, at once appointed him to a position as
a teacher there. He remained there for four
years when he resigned in 1888 to accept a
like position at the Colorado School.

As a teadher he was painstaking and
thorough, and was distinguished for his ability
to interest .and encourage his pupils in their
learning. Being scholarly in his tastes and in-
clinations, a master of several languages and
an omnivorous reader, he delighted the pupils
by his lectures and addresses covering a wide
range of subjects.

Mr. Veditz was for many years a valued
member of the National Association of the
Deaf and at one time chairman of the execu-
tive committee and later a vice-president. In
190-4 he was elected president of the association
and again re-elected to that office in 1907.

Upon retiring from the position of teacher at
the Colorado School, lie made 'Ms home at Col-
orado Springs, devoting his abilities to poul-
try raising and then to floral cultivation. In
both of these lines he became prominent for
the superior grade of his poultry breeds and
the high class of his horticultural growths. The
extent of the prominence of the position he held
among groups of hearing people is evinced by
his election as secretary of the Poultry As-
sociation and frequent selection as a repre-
sentative to its conventions.

In the last several years the conditions of
his health rendered him almost helpless, but
throughout it all his indomitable spirit
prevailed and he wrote with indefatigable
nergy for certain publications of the deaf,
showing courage and determination that was
remarkable. — From D. M. J.

AGBAD & JTC k i s s i n g… first comes Oralism then comes Audism…

I Will Never Forget mansfield

I Will Never Forget by Ellen Mansfield

So as hopefully you already know – the AG Bell Association will be having their Listening & Spoken Language (LSL) conference in Los Angeles this summer.  July 18-20, 2013.  and hopefully you already know that Audism Free America (AFA) and Ca. Deaf community members will be having some rallies (see vlog at bottom of this entry)

Also in LA is the infamous John Tracy Clinic, which was established by the wife of famous actor (Spencer Tracy) because they had a Deaf son (John Tracy) and she wanted him to speak.  He was raised orally and even after he became blind from Usher’s Syndrome later in life still no one signed with him.  Family members would just listen to him talk and then they would do tactile outlining of letters into the palm of his hand or if more lengthy info. on his back.

The John Tracy Clinic is famous because it brought English word kits directly into the homes of families with Deaf children.  Parents desperate to know what to do with their Deaf child would get these packets to label various items in their home CHAIR DOOR STAIRS …. a visual system to get words into the minds of the wee people of the HandEyes.

The reason why it is also famous is because it adheres to the exclusionary dogma of Oral / Aural ONLY – ie the wee things are NOT allowed to sign if they are reared on the John Tracy Clinic method which in turn is affiliated with the AG Bell method.  The John Tracy Clinic is not only in the business of making Deaf children behave as much like Hearing children as possible, they also have a master’s program.  the online program
• Requires current employment as a teacher in a “Center of Excellence” as outlined in the Alexander Graham Bell Association’s “Components of a Quality Auditory-Oral Program”1

this AG Bell Components of a Quality Auditory-Oral Program that the John Tracy Clinic adheres to promotes the belief that to hear and/or behave as a hearing person is superior to being Deaf (ie AUDISM) and follows Auditory Verbal Therapy (AVT), which denies the visual acuity of Deaf children via lipreading or gesturing and/or signing.

Don’t believe me well here are a few quotes from that AG Bell Program:

AG BELL Components: As we prepare students who have a hearing disability for the real world, it isimperative that they develop the oral communication skills that will enable them to compete.

Resistance by David Call

Resistance by David Call

FACT: this is false folks – i know plenty of Deaf folks who do not communicate orally that are able to compete in the real world.  Its not an imperative for life – its just an imperative for their industry and their ideology.
AG BELL Components: This is particularly important since 90-95% of alI students with a hearing disability are born to hearing parents and families who communicate orally.
FACT: Aren’t they cute in how they make it seem like 90-95% of the families do not sign when in FACT many Hearing families with Deaf children DO SIGN.
AG BELL Components: Public School Caucus is dedicated to providing auditory/oral programs and options for students with hearing disabilities. The development of auditory/skills increases students’ ability to learn and to meet their maximum academic potential.
FACT: The majority of Deaf children are implanted and being raised orally in oral Deaf schools and/or the mainstream and we have NOT seen a marked improvement in Deaf children’s literacy rate.  Auditory/oral programs continue to show mixed results while Deaf children who were given a fully accessible natural sign language and English at a young age generally show strong literacy and cognitive skills.
AG BELL Components: All program components must support that oral philosophy. This is based on the following beliefs:
The role of education is to prepare students to live in the hearing world by developing oral
communication skills.
All persons involved in the student’s program must be committed to the auditory/oral
philosophy. This includes:
-the parents, immediate family, and extended family,
-the teachers of the hearing impaired, support staff, and administrators,
-the general education staff and general education administrators, and
-the board of education and the community.
‘ All programs and methods used must be designed, implemented, and maximized to develop
the student’s ability to communicate orally.
All methods/modalities must support and not supplant oral communication/programming.
Examples of supportive systems Would include audition, speechreading, and the printed
symbol. Methods that supplant would include Signed English, ASL, etc
FACT: See how EVERYONE must be oral / aural only – even the extended family members.  Imagine the effort that goes into trying to deny the child any exposure to ASL.  I know of one young person that told me their parents wouldn’t even let them have up Deaf centered posters in their room for fear that ASL would soon follow.
Note the last line of how ASL is maligned as a supplanter.
AG BEll Component under the Physical Facilities section:

A quality auditory/oral program is sensitive to the physical facilities in which the program is housed. It
is imperative that students who utilize auditory/oral communication be in a separate facility from those
students using sign language.
FACT: Never the twain shall meet, eh?  Keep them far far as in physically far apart.  Oy the jealous mistress.
There is more (you can see an older entry examining other parts of AG Bell Doctrine) but its UGH and you get the idea that 1. AG Bell your fanaticism NOT COOL and 2. JTC your training new teachers in this dogmatic doctrine NOT COOL.

AGB & JTC k i s s i n g… first comes Oralism then comes Audism…

MaishaAnd if you are already thinking but the ability to speak is such a Godsend or its only for their own good or grrr that Durr with all her facts – check out a survivor of John Tracy Clinic and her beautiful truths.  She even included George Veditz and i was like WOW!

LA is starting to look like the Bermuda Triangle of Oralism now aint it?

No wonder AG Bell set its sights there.

This is why we STAND folks.

“Let us join together as one to protest these educators who would fix our destiny without consulting us, without hearing us. Here in the greatest republic of the Old World, the delegates from that in the New ask all present to join together to affirm a new declaration of human rights, the right of the deaf to life, liberty the pursuit of happiness, and the education of their children on a plan they accept. Let us declare to the entire world that the deaf will not be crucified on the cross of a single method.” James L. Smith
