“The Professionals” FIXation and WAKING UP

“The Professionals” FIXation and WAKING UP

heye all

have u ever noticed how many folks have a FIXation on FIXING Deaf folks?

and have u noticed how just when they r upping the ante on the quest for the holy grail to make Deaf folks undeaf – Deaf folks r WAKING UP?  the mask of benevolence coming down by the professionals to reveal paternalism, audism, phonocentrism, Oralism, linguicism and Deaf & Ally folks r starting to see see what we mean mean.

It IS mean and wrong and unjust and inhumane to actively, systematically, relentlessly deny a Deaf child the right to a fully natural and accessible language.  They should not be doomed to forever and ever more have to “WORK FOR THEIR WORDS” – they should be afforded a measure of equality of condition at a very young age cuz that is when they NEED and DESERVE it most.  Its a truth folks – dont matter how u try to spin it.  This is what the ICED Vancouver 2010 New Era Accord of the Future agreement is all about folks!  Don’t deny them a natural Signed Language – NOPE.  DON’T cuz that there is a s crime against humanity.

Oral / Aural ONLY – bye bye.

see the full ICED Vancouver 2010 New Era Agreement and Accord of the Future.  Read ALL of it carefully.

sure respect the folks who were reared that way.  Respect the folks who use other systems (cuing, sim-coming, SEEing, etc) but NEVER accept a program that is oral / aural ONLY.  Just as we should never accept a program that prohibits the learning of English.

sure let them learn to talk etc but DONT EXCLUDE ASL.  that is just EXTREMEly wrong and unjust.

Indiana – i salute ya.  wow u make me so happy.  That there rally for QUALIFED board members and equal representation – my goodness u shine.

Yep i see Governor Daniels is being mighty stubborn.  Some folks dont like to admit when they done wrong.  It’s saddens me truly.  I always admire when a person can admit when they have erred and works to correct the wrong done.

No worries – he will come around and see the light.  Or he wont  and we just keep pushing that elephant out of the room.  the Truth always wins if u keep standing tall and firm.

aint no way he is gonna be able to run for president of the US of A if he is determined to support folks who support programs that deny Deaf children the right to ASL =YIKES dude so cruel and unusual of ya.

so take a bow all Orange T-shirt folks – do a subaltern rebel howl – and jump at da sun.  u be shining folks!

oh and dont worry about candy’s blog – its all yawn and twisting and cherry picking a here and there.  no matters and no worries.  she actually aided the oppose 2072 movement a great deal because of all her BSing prompted many folks to take a good and hard look at things and piece together some important stuff and in the end the Oppose 2072 folks WON!  so now that she has turned her myth-making attention your way – ya hoo – it means u r likely to win too.  NOTE: im gonna copy and paste a comment from her place by Joseph the III cuz it is public domain and really it has some mighty fine stuff there.  And some folks dont care to have to weed past her BS to get to the good stuff so ill spare ya – OH Joseph geez u keep winning my heart with ur truth trumpeting)

Back to the folks on the ground – Folks coming alive and waking up!  mighty fine, mighty fine.

Awake and Alive and Abuzz and… BUSY

this is why we fight folks – for the wee ones who dont have no say in the matter

who’s yelp in whosville is MIGHTY important but often overlooked and unheard cuz it aint in the tune THE PROFESSIONALS want to hear

no matters – the good folks on the ground r waking up and connecting the dots.  All roads lead to ……THE PROFESSIONALS

(see Deaf Pundit’s awesome two blog entries re: Hear Indiana, which is a state chapter of AG Bell Assoc.)

PROFESSIONALS – individuals and organizations

now why have i zoned in on the PROFESSIONALS well we would have to thank the folks at Cochlear Americas for that tip.  When we visited the headquarters in Colorado and i asked about the Oral / Aural ONLY push – they said “we at Cochlear Americas don’t take a position on that” – you knows pleas of neutrality.  So i asked well who then is pushing for the oral / aural ONLYism – where is that coming from – they answered THE PROFESSIONALS.

meaning – Doctors, audiologists, speech & language pathologists – oh no!

(yes i know these are the same folks who got busted for kickbacks with the professionals by the Dept of Justice and a CA whistle blower but im hoping they r done with that trick now that Advanced Bionics is off the market in the U.S. until it can get the FDA to approve its cochlear implants again after the FAILING HOT fiasco – ODD how AB can manufacture their revised cochlear implants in the US but can only market them oversees now until the FDA says ok for US sales.  so while CA has been enjoying a market monopoly in AB’s absence and Med-El being a lower end CI and more popular in Europe than in the US where everybody wants the latest and greatest gadget – im hoping CA is no longer doing corporate deviance tricks with THE PROFESSIONALS.  Especially since they (CA) tell us that its THE PROFESSIONALS who are promoting oral / aural ONLYism.)

and dont worry we did ask CA how they could sponsor Oral / Aural only organizations – we can chat about that later.  right now we only have eyes for….

they are circling folks – closing in.  been doing it for a mighty long time.  don’t believe me?  Well, just check out how there ever present FIXation on a death of deafness and excluding ASL is resulting in peaceful, direct confrontation by the byproducts of their dis-affection:

1. Unity for Gallaudet – I King Jordan and Jane Fernandes were married to the idea that JKF was the only one who could lead Gallaudet toward the 2010 vision – the Death of deafness vision but other folks had other visions (remember the brave new order that JKF preached about) and…

result: JKF is no longer the leader at Gallaudet and Gallaudet is still alive and well !  wow!

2. Deaf folks engaging in direct peaceful confrontation at AG Bell Conferences (VA, CA, Wisc, Indiana, etc) Thank you Deaf Bilingual Coalition

Result: Parents talked directly to Deaf folks

3. Meeting and rallying at AG Bell Assoc Headquarters Thank you Audism Free America and all the good folks who came out

Result: First time in history that Deaf folks demonstrated at AG Bell Headquarters

4. Orange & Brown Coalition and the Deaf community lobbies for the removal of plaque and dorm name honoring AG Bell, the man, at NTID/RIT

Result: the plaque comes down and is destroyed.  The dorm is no longer called Bell Hall.

5. AB 2072 – remember the list of PROFESSIONAL organizations that pushed for the bill that was to route all the babes to audiologists for follow up to promote the “scope of their practice“(scroll down for 1-23).  Forgot which groups were behind this bill – no problem – i know the elephant in the room is counting on us having a short memory but we dont – we be AWAKE and AWARE and ALIVE.

* American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees

result: AB 2072 FAILED and the Opposed AB 2072 folks were victorious in their kill the bill aim

(see how ya all shine when u stand long and hard?  long live the Yellow Shirts – ILY.)

6. Cuomo’s budget tries to take IEPs and $ away from 4201 Schools and give it to home district “professionals

result: 4201 budget is safe for now and IEPs remain in the hands of the true experts – trained teachers of the Deaf – not professionals that serve the mainstream

(see what Larry Fleischer’s experiences with his daughter’s IEP – transcript below the video box)

7. The FIADDA (Italian Families Assoc. for the Defense of the Rights of Deafness)- an Italian A G Bell Assoc. equivalent –  lobbies to block the recognition and validation of LIS – Italian Sign Language and tries to get it demoted and degraded to LMG (LMG – a communication of mimes and gestures) and ….

results: folks all over the globe protest and it looks like LMG is getting tossed and LIS is gonna PASS – ya hoo

8. the PROFESSIONALS are trained by AG Bell Academy in Auditory-Verbal Therapy and Listening and Spoken Language –

they are:

  • establishing oral / aural ONLY training programs all over the country,
  • establishing oral / aural ONLY “option schools” (what a euphemism!)  that prohibit signing all over the contry,
  • propagating their practices via the Volta Review – a publication by AG Bell Association (check out the table of content of any issue and prepare to cringe – NOTE: the N # in most of the studies is usually VERY small and VERY selective)
  • establishing alliances with: Cochlear implant businesses, Hearing Aid businesses, EHDI, NIH, CDC, governmental representatives, etc

Not to mention how AG Bell Association has long tried to keep Parents away from Deaf adults – Thank you Deaf Bilingual Coalition for having Deaf adults come to face to face with parents to share and connect and do positive Direct Confrontation

Ahhh the New World Order and the Cochlear Implant+AVT revolution

results: not overwhelmingly in their favor.  Yes there has been a HUGE increase in implanting babes, youth and adults – no question about that but the “success” of the implants have been very mixed, inconsistent, and unreliable.  We wont even get into the numerous recalls (lemons, duds, zaps, failing hot, explanting, re-implanting) HOURS of AVT, lawsuits, etc – nah)

curiouser and curiouser

soooooo keep STANDING FOLKS.  Stand long and hard and firm.  Soul Force / Truth Force rock.  a mighty stream is gonna roll

ya all are BEAUTIFUL.  now i know that some of the victories above are not fully manifested – meaning that some of the threats to 4201 schools, LIS, etc still lurk in the corners.  This is why we need a federal and international effort folks.  A Deaf Cultural protection act and more.

No worries – we can do it.  I have seen u – and u shine.  All we got to do is  keep jumping at da sun and know that we have only just begun.

Rub the sand out of yer EYES folks – we be waking up and shaking up!

I read your blog post with interest.

I just want to point out that the statements that you stated that Mr. Howard Rosenblum said were not actual quotes. These statements were formed and written by whomever that wrote the news. At least, that is what I found through Google. If you can find a source that Mr. Howard Rosenblum actually stated these words in his own way, I would appreciate knowing it.

It may look that I am nitpicking but when I read your blog post, I originally thought that Mr. Rosenblum actually stated these words. When I looked for the source, all I got is the statements that the writer of news wrote.

It may not matter for some people but it does matter for me because there is always a small chance that what Mr. Rosenblum said might have been misunderstood by the writer of the news. I don’t see any correction or clarification from himself or NAD and it is probably safe to assume that the statements in the news that were attributed to him are accurate.

Overall, I agree with your basic point that there are no evidences that these new board members are against ASL. It is not a good idea to use the dichotomy to assume that just because they favor listening and speaking approach automatically means that they are against ASL. However, the very huge impact that the technology of cochlear implant on pedagogical methods for the deaf children cannot be underestimated. The technology of cochlear implant is very powerful that it makes listening and speaking approach more reliable and more accurate and makes the approach more widely available to larger population of deaf children.

There is fear deep inside me that the number of deaf children that go through the approaches sans cochlear implant may be too small that it becomes unsustainable. I will use 2,400 deaf children in Indiana as an example. (The number can be arbitrary.) Say, in 2015, 2,300 deaf children are doing well in listening and speaking environment with the aid of cochlear implant. 100 deaf children are doing well in ASL environment and they don’t have cochlear implant. Will these new board members still support these 100 ASL users? Say, in 2016, 2350 deaf children are doing well in listening and speaking environment and 50 deaf children are doing well in ASL environment. Will these new board members still support 50 ASL users? What about 20 ASL users? What about 10 ASL users? What about 5 ASL users? Finally, what about 1 ASL user? If these new board members can give ironclad assurances that they will always support ASL deaf children even if there is only one ASL deaf child in the whole state of Indiana, I will relax a bit.

While I was googling on Mr. John Wheeler who wrote that article about conquering deafness, I learned that he was murdered few months ago: http://www.slate.com/id/2285531/ May he rest in peace. I continued googling on him and found this biography: http://www.sldinfo.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/John-Wheeler-Bio.pdf It was entirely his right to express his goals but I am not quite comfortable with his enthusiasm to end deafness by putting cochlear implants in deaf children. His enthusiasm might have been well-intentioned but I believe that he should have sit back a bit and allow the parents to decide what is best for their deaf children including the decision to use ASL sans cochlear implant.

Good job hanging out these “professionals” to be exposed.

I’d want to see that word, PROFESSIONAL, not to be used to describe only hearing-option personnel, however. Deaf professionals and their hearing colleagues need to be recognized and listened to for their expertise. Too often, in the past they were ignored or allowed to speak only when they supported the status quo.

These days, with a growing number of Ph.D’s who are Deaf and researchers who are finding ASL even more valuable than thought previously, we should also be fighting for their recognition and their contributions.

At least you are honest about hating the CI, most people hide their true feelings and instead talk about “bias” and “fairness”.

But, you are missing the biggest point of all. People don’t choose implants or spoken language (as parents or professionals who work in the field) to “FIX” deaf children. They do it to offer opportunities. A CI and spoken language simply add, they don’t take away. As a parent who chose two implants for my child (two that you bash with glee, from AB) it wasn’t about “fixing” her at all. It was about giving her the opportunity to hear, which she didn’t have before.

Amy – big thanks. by the way great blog re: Swinbourne’s My Song film – he rocks as does his films

Dianrez – true. maybe u can write something up along those lines

    Miss kat’s mom –

this here entry aint ABOUT you. Nor is it about me

its about the FIXation of the “professionals” who actively deny ASL for a Deaf child

u can try to hurl as many digs at me as you like but folks who have open eyes and hearts know that im a pretty decent egg. i dont toss ’em at people. I just tell the truth and some times that hurts.

    and it is not easy

This blog entry is not about u and ur choice MKM. I understand why u done what u did and why u do what u do – even what u r trying to do right now. i understand

i hope you understand that this blog entry aint even ABOUT cochlear implants – they are not the star of this show. Its about “the professionals” and about peaceful civil disobedience in the face of injustice.

some day maybe you can see and hear what we are saying

until then i do wish you all the best

Do you speak to the professionals? Do you ask them why they do what they do? Do you see the long hours and low pay? Do you see the joy in their eyes when the children they LOVE take wing and soar?

I do. I see it every day.

    MKM –

yes i have talked to the professionals

yes i have heard their rationale of why they exclude sign language from the life of a Deaf child

re joy in the eyes of the professionals –

my concern is for the kids that cry, the kids that kick and scream, the kids that resist, the kids that shrink, the kids that hurt, the kids that wither, the kids that slither, the kids that have broken wings MKM. some of them were given sign language later in their educational career BUT had all that other stuff lopped onto them – bilaterial CIs surviving ALONE in the mainstream to be mocked and bullied and end up crying in the bathroom stalls, hating the fan that is used in AVT cuz of what it symbolized and denied them the right to visual acuity – only for an hour a day or so but still they HATE it vehemently – this really surprised me MKM – and this from “successes” hmmmmm

they got survival stories to share MKM and i been listening to them

i know about roots and wings and soaring MKM. i dont gotta look at the joy in the faces of the professionals – i be looking at the byproducts of the professionals

i been listening to THEIR song

we care about all the kids yes. not just the low paid hard working professionals. we care about the byproducts there of

re: taking wing and soaring – well yes i have seen Deaf kids sprout wings and soar – (what matters deafness to the ears when the mind hears – victor hugo) it is glorious, is it not?

Miss Kat’s mom, so did most of us. We grew up with them. We went on the guilt trips they landed on us, endured the times they bragged about us in front of us to visitors in the classroom, and suffered when they analyzed our speech and language. We felt how personally they took it when we didn’t perform to their hopes. Yes, they loved us very much, and some we loved in return.

But, they were INVESTED professionals. They came into the field for specific reasons, not always purely professional. Some of us went to graduate school with their younger equivalents, and asked them why they were in the field. Many answers: Because I wanted to help deaf children. Because I know I can make a difference. My sister (neice, son, parent) is deaf. Because it means working with children for better pay than in the public schools. Because I want to give the children the gift I know I can give them. Some of them truly sounded idealistic and naive, some not honest, some actually mercenary.

Parents are often impressed with these people, and this is understandable because they are often sincere and idealistic. They promise hope, the moon, great expectations, display excitement and love. The relationship is not supposed to become personal, but it often does. I remember my mother and my speech teacher becoming such great friends they went out to card games and ladies’ nights together. My father would pick them up and drive them back to their homes, joining in the merriment.

But take note: they are mostly HEARING people. They do not personally know the lives of Deaf people, and most do not know any Deaf adults or work daily with Deaf professionals. Most do not even know sign language. What they know about Deaf people and children is 90 percent from graduate school and represents the aggregation of past theories, current (often industry-financed) research, technical data, and several journals of educational papers.

Take them with a healthy grain of salt. The people you want to test everything against are the DEAF people, the ones you began your own knowledge search with. Deaf professionals, especially, are the ones you want to guide your inquiries, tip you off to what to look for, what questions to ask, and most importantly, help you see the kind of person your child may become. There are both oral and ASL-using Deaf professionals, so look for the ones that are familiar with both systems and can give a balanced viewpoint.

Of course, by now you feel you HAVE a balanced, well-rounded education on deafness and Deaf people. You wouldn’t be here or at this point otherwise. However, it is still a PARENT’s viewpoint, and no more complete than any of us has, including Deaf peoples. Ultimately, the real expert will be your daughter on HER own life and needs.

one should see the reactions of people when you tell then a country mandates CI for those who qualify. first they say it is not true and demand proofs and then they are like ” so? whats so bad about it? they should be treated”

they always end up supporting it.
they cringe at the thought . MKM may not feel that way and is fine that deaf people raise their children deaf as she did raised her daughter that way. but many people do cringe at the thought of people not implanting their child and use ASL.

  9. Miss Kat's mom
    Jun 13, 2011 @ 12:22:20

I get that there are many Deaf kids who were raised in ways that were harmful….many years ago. I don’t know if it is still happening, if it is, that is horrible. BUT, the other 99% of kids are not being treated this way.

Oral school no longer shame or punish sign language. They don’t allow a child to go years and years without language. If a child isn’t “making it” they meet with the parents and tell them that they must add sign, and refer them to schools that can provide that. And they do it BEFORE age 3!

AVT uses a hoop, yeah, but kids who can’t hear don’t do AVT. It is for kids who can and do listen.

I know that you care about these kids, but you need to actually go to these places, see these kids and talk to them. This isn’t the past, the world has changed, go out and see it.

(Oh, and my daughter has had deaf staff at every one of her oral schools as well as Deaf parents who have chosen CIs and spoken language for their kids. Maybe you should talk to them as well.)

At Ms Kat’s mom – it never ceases to amaze me how often an organization, institution, or individual will claim to be different than they were in their more abusive years. I would not ask an embezzler to put money in the bank for me no matter how many years it has been or how many times they claim to have repented. But let’s skip the nonsense of arguing over the mereits and demerits of the statistical gymnastics performed by CI manufacturers and professionals. Let’s get to the heart of the matter — Why is a child that is born deaf ever interpreted to be some sign of god’s displeasure with the parents? Why is it that parents feel guilt, shame, and remorse when they find out their child does not measure up to medical definitions of normalcy? Why do parents question what they did to deserve having a child that places a question mark on the parents genetics (sexuality?)? That isn’t a question of having a CI or not having a CI. But it is no less important.

Beautifully done Patti! Do you ever sleep? lol. Your blogs often show so much information! It amazes me how you put it all together! I think that its great that Miss Kat’s mom participates here, this kind of dialouge is sadly needed with many more parents! I think that if hearing aids were covered by Insurance, Parents would have more choices. As it is now, many parents cannot afford the 2 or 3k it cost per aid, and insurance companies fight every time legislation is introduced to stop this coverage for children. CI is covered by Ins as it is under “surgery”. Despite the opportunities tools for assistive hearing bring children who can benefit from them, the misnomer is that CI will not “fix” nor cure deafness – ever. Tis why you are spot on with making sure ASL is part of every curriculum. We should be arguing to give the child language opportunities which means put visual language opportunity using ASL at the forefront, so that opportunity to excel in English is a sure success, not a “maybe” years later when parents often find out that their child does not benefit from the CI as a teen or a young adult seeking job opportunities. That is the ultimate goal. Jobs to be able to have part in the American dream.

Hi. I am a hearing person. I would just like to say that I think something is very wrong if parents of deaf babies are given such biased, unbalanced, pathology-driven information. In the US, parents of hearing babies are now being encouraged to use ASL with their children as a first language because of the remarkable benefits. Benefits like brain development, spatial awareness, focus, ability to express themselves and to attach meaning to that expression. The list goes on…
Patti, I admire your enthusiasm and compassion. Great post.

    Heya Patti 😉

    Howdy folks..

Wanted parents and hearing friends to basically know that being Deaf is not a disability, but all about being normal. Deafhood is being a normal human being. There is no need to allow fixation, especially CI’s and Oralism to be imposed on any child born into this world. This practice of fixation is invasion of one’s body especially on babies and children, even mentally and physically. It destroys the dignity of the child being human. Deafness is a medical view (fixation), for people who feel the insecurities for someone else, especially for their own babies and children. The fixation due to the insecure feelings they think for others especially their own babies and children unfortunately do happen this modern day and age. We should still have knew better than this instead, and yet still the malpractice going on for babies, children to have CI’s and Oralism. Fixation is simply wrong, because parents are lied to, that the child would be insecure being in this world. To prevent such atrocities on their offspring, parents should not think their son or daughter would feel insecure! Medical views on deafness is nothing but all a myth. Parents should know that there is Deafhood, and its all about being human. is not. The fixation going for CI’s and Oralism is way too invasive destroying the child’s dignity. Folks like me are human because we have American Sign Language language and Deaf Culture. Parents, please do not feel the insecurities for your own son or daughter, which really do not exist in Deafhood. Denying a human, especially your own to be a normal Deaf child is a form of mental and physical abuse. It is wrong to deprive them their dignity. Deafhood is not a medical view but what humanity is all about, by being being a normal human being.

PS, CI’s and Oralism is all a failure, and does not work on babies or children. It’s not a miracle cure for deafness. It’s a billion dollar “fixation” industry, in other words, it is quackery and snake oil tactics used on all innocent babies and children. So again that is why these atrocities are forms of mental and physical abuse. Be warned.. Also learn more and help stop this nightmare going on for all these innocents.

    Thank you for reading…

Not a mandate but pretty close to it, there been rumored how countries set policies where deaf people can’t get education based on their language (sign language) , but they are far willing even include bi-bi if they implant their child. I wish there was a website showing cochlear implant/deaf education/parental rights policies and regulations. I remember reading a cochlear research that happened to mentioned a country ,(it could be denmark, sweden, switzerland, or nethersland), strict policy on implantation. if I ever find it again, i’ll let you know. I wished I saved it. but here is a few research that tell about each country:

guest – thanks for coming back to address MZ question

MZ thanks for asking the question

it is important to note that GUEST didnt say “against parents wishes” MZ added that and i understand why u did because that would be a major concern if against parents wishes

presently they are starting to implant as young as 5 mo. old in europe so its kinda hard to know if parents even have enuf time to determine their own wishes and we have seen just from the oral /aural only movement that parents felt it would be in the best interest of the child to raise them oral / aural only because that is what they were told by the PROFESSIONALS

i believe that sweden did have some type of policy that said parents should learn sign before they are allowed to get their children implanted but i believe that alot of the schools have gone oral aural only because of the high number of implantees

in Denmark – i believe it is predicted will have nearly 100% implanting of the Deaf infants / children and no policy of parents must learn sign first – in fact some scholars have been pointing to Denmark as a possible site for an endangered signed language

    thanks for the links

    michael –

ur comment was stuck in pending. not sure why so apologies for the delay in approving it.

thanks for sharing and re: “success” and “failure” i think it depends on one’s center and pov

if one views Deaf as an infirmity – anything that enables a Deaf child to hear the wee-est bit is gonna be seen as a success

if one views Deaf as a cultural and linguistic group – anything that seeks to their cultural and linguistic rights will be seen as an affront

there is a way to affirm Deaf folks cultural and linguisitic integrity while also empowering them to be bicultural-bilingual etc

the problem is that Oralism has always been a jealous mistress and framed everything as being binary and has ACTIVELY suppressed and undermined Deaf culture and ASL and that can not be condoned or tolerated

    Bryan –
thanks for sharing. My biggest concerns re: CI are safety and corporate deviance. I don’t advocate for a moratorium on them nor do i judge anyone who has one, wants one or has gotten some for their children. We look at the systems that be.

re: love and support for Deaf infants, children and people of the world – this is very important and first and foremost we must have a healthy does of self-love so we may also LOVE the oppressor – the audists and oralists. Love ’em. Love ’em enuf to tell them the truth and to say Ya Basta – peacefully and firmly.

    Much peace
