‘no particular reason’ huh?

‘no particular reason’

in a thread here at People of the Eye a commenter shared that he emailed Catherine Murphy, Gallaudet’s new PR chief, and asked her why she led a press release about a diversity day at Gallaudet with ‘hearing’ before all other groups listed – her reply was basically “no particular reason”

id copy and paste the commenter’s comment here but this is one  time he does not have the standard line under his name of “Public domain notice: I put all of my expressions in this post in the public domain.”  hmmmm?

https://handeyes.wordpress.com/2011/03/07/priorities-what-are-gallaudets-priorities/

Now back to main point (yes, folks i dont want to see comments bashing Joseph the III – i have an affinity for him even if we often do not see eye to eye or aye to aye.  he is generally an honest bloke and i like that.  the fact that he is content with Ms. Murphy’s ‘no particular reason’ response just communicates to me how low his expectations are for her and us and we gotta help him aim a bit higher and better and i dont want this to be about Joseph the III – he did a service by getting the reply and we shall return our gaze to the MAIN POINT)

(note: if you are not familiar with Catherine Murphy’s past actions prior to coming to Gally as the Executive Director of Public and Media Relations, you can check out: https://handeyes.wordpress.com/2010/12/16/2-for-what-gallaudets-new-appointments/)

Da main point:

– is not to bash Ms. Murphy either

– is not to distort and distrupt either

– it is to:

know some truths

and ask some questions

Truths & Questions:

1. there are VERY important things happening in the world right now and this matter is very small beans but we r still paying attention cuz Gandhi said:”Whatever you do may seem insignificant to you, but it is most important that you do it.”

2. According to one blogger in a Gallaudet Spring 2011 newsletter Ms. Murphy stated: “I haven’t encountered any negative feedback myself, and everyone here at Gallaudet has been very welcoming.”

This is weird folks because we know she cruises the Deaf blogsphere – she kinda has to in her new position and had to in her previous gig at AG Bell Association and so she must have encountered some negative feedback.  Folks have not been shy about communicating their concerns re: Gallaudet’s hiring of her so is she saying “I’m not Deaf, I’m just ignoring you”?

im just asking.

She goes on to say “However, I can understand where some people might take notice of my selection for this position.”

OK so this means that she can see why folks might be alarmed by her hire so you would THINK she would not lead the news release about the diversity day with “hearing” if she had such an “understanding” and “expertise in public RELATIONS”

So again what is she communicating?  “I’m not Blind, I can see you.  I’m just ignoring you” ?

im just asking.

Murphy goes on to say “I see my role as acting at the discretion of President Hurwitz and the Board of Trustees in implementing their vision as outlined in the Gallaudet Strategic Plan and in supporting the University’s bilingual mission.”

Wow – this is GREAT.  has anyone seen ANY release or publicity penned by Catherine where she has mentioned American Sign Language???? Even the news release re: the communication day never used the word ASL or bilingualism (except when noting someone’s position).  Usually press releases INFORM the public.  If we asked Catherine why no mention of ASL or explaining of bilingualism or quoting of Gally’s mission statement re: being a bilingual campus, do you think her reply would be the very inadequate refrain of “no particular reason.”  ?

I’m just asking folks.

Murphy goes on to say, “I am especially interested in promoting public awareness and positive depictions of deaf individuals in the media.  There is a lot this community has to offer that I think is far too often overlooked.”

OK – wow that SOUNDS and LOOKS great but her ACTIONS in terms of what she puts first in her release and what she includes and excludes dont sync up.  so does she think we are Deaf & Dumb?  or is she Hearing & Hubris?

or what?

so what does the listing of “hearing” first communicate? (pls know that other specialized colleges emphasize the groups they are established first and foremost for Spelman, Moorehouse, Howard, Haskell, Brandeis, etc – you are NOT gonna see them list the MAJORITY / DOMINANT group FIRST in their press releases – u might not even see the MAJORITY / DOMINANT group mentioned at all – it is a given that their be Whites and males around at these various places – they dont need to LIST them to prove diversity – instead they EMPHASIZE by stating first and sometimes only the OVERLOOKED group. hmmmm?)

so what does the listing of “hearing” first communicate?

1. she doesnt know her audiences – booo that is bad for a PR person

2. she does know her audiences but does not respect them (Deaf and Hearing allies) – boo, not cool

3. she comes from a position of privilege and didnt realize at all what a faux pas that would be – ohhh dear hope she learns up quick

4. audism – yikes i hope that aint what it is.  i truly do

5. ‘no particular anything’ – huh?  geez that is lame and Deaf folks deserve better when u diss them – LIKE THE BLOODY PEPSI LETTER CATHERINE.  (wow she cares about how the overlooked Deaf are represented in the MEDIA – cares so much she supports and DEFENDS a letter that says dont show signing people on TV cuz that communicates they are isolated and dependent – WTF! this is the expert that Gally hires – yep sorry Gally but really im just so amazed at this i cant believe it.  AG Bell retract that letter and apologize and i will be the first to shout out- we start ANEW.  Until u do – know that we aint no fools and u can spin as much as u please but you are B U S T E D.  We are NOT dumb so stop insulting us and treating us as if we can not see ur b.s. – it totally STINKS .  Why Gallaudet decided to import that #hit – i have NO IDEA!  i suspect they thought it would be great to have an “insider” help draw in and outreach to parents and other feeder tools (audiologists, oral-aural-only programs etc but unless, she can show more evidence of celebrating and cherishing ASL & English and Deaf culture – it is gonna back fire big time)

now again i want to emphasize – i dont want no bashing of Joseph III, Ms. Murphy, Dr. Hurwitz, etc  I just want us to have our thinking caps on and our eyes open for a PARTICULAR REASON

yes, i got a reason and i think it is very reasonable

What, pray tell, is my reasoning u ask?  well, ill gladly tell ya.  It is because the 2nd wave of Oralism and Neo-eugenics has been crashing upon our shores and now is the time to shore up folks – it is the time to stand and be counted.  it is the time to build the mountain so we, Deaf ASL folks and future Deaf ASL folks, will not be washed away in the quest to make folks undeaf.  It is to work tirelessly to preserve human diversity, language diversity, and biodiversity.

So if u r in a reading kinda mood – i have copied and pasted a long comment (surprise, surprise i made a long comment somewhere) here – just trying to put as much stuff in one place so u dont have to go searching for all the clues and no, fool, i am not speaking of some great insane conspiracy – i am saying the TRUTH that folks in power view being deaf and Deaf as being a bad thing and they work really hard to diminish, dispute, disrespect, disenfranchise, and delete such ways of being.  Gallaudet, while it shall always open its arms to all folks, shall not abandon the core of why it exists in the first place.  If it goes that route then we might as well not have it – just push them all out to sea and let them sink or swim like they been doing since day one.  What puts Gallaudet on the map is its DIFFERENCE – how it is un i q.  Not how it prioritizes the majority but rather folks who are by and large invisible.

Can you see us now Catherine?

Comment in response to Ahhh Pathetic entry by Jeffrey Roberts @ The Terlinguan http://theterlinguan.blogspot.com/2011/02/ahhhpathetic.html

My response:

holy cow – this is a golden one me friend!

thank u and the voice that says:
“Don’t be silly!…This is the world of apathy. No one is going to care about anything you say.”

we are to be d-e-a-f to. that is the siren call for the death of the spirit and we shall not hear or heed it

as sojourner truth sung it “no man could head me!”

we got to have the “spiritual audacity to assert our somebodyness” (MLK) and say:

Gally not cool for hiring Catherine Murphy as ur PR chappy when the Pepsi letter has NEVER been revoked and regretted by AG Bell & co.

Gally not cool for taking a chopping axe to programs that PROMOTE the welfare of Deaf folks like Deaf Studies / Deaf History and the Theatre Education program while keeping other majors that other colleges provide fine and dandy and have nuttin’ to do with the Deaf soul

Gally not cool chopping Deaf History just at a time when the ICED 2010 Vancouver New Era agreement calls upon all the nations of the world to REMEMBER OUR HISTORY

how can we bloody remember it if we dont know it

Gally not cool issuing out those pink slips on ❤ Day – that aint the loving thing to do and that is a questionable thing for the PR person to have chosen to do – could have waited a day – couldnt it have hmmmmmm

Gally not cool turning ur back on good ole eddie

he did not die in vain – his refrain shall be heard – “what’s that u ask?” what refrain – ohhh the one that Abraham Lincoln uttered before him and the one that Tommy Jefferson sung before him and the one that MLK shouted from the mountain tops of after them – ya know scores and scores befores and afters

ya know that self-evident one that only few seem able to see as it pertains to DEAF ASL folks

nah they aint come and gone for naught

in vain

nope

and them all there with the vanity to say to Hear and/or behave as Hearing folks do is better than being Deaf

and them all there preaching the gospel of calamity – of failing early HEARing detection test before the wee thing even sings her/his song all in the name of the cause of making them the same

and them all there with the insanity to institutionalize that (in)sensibility into curriculum, legislation, incorporation

to all of youse and yours i say : P

i love ya but wrong is wrong and right is right

all folks were created equal and babes should not have to work for their words

and Gally should not abandon its roots

i dont care about a hoot toots about the 2nd coming of Oralism and Neo-eugenics as an EXCUSE for promoting all that is designed to eradicate Deaf ways of being – nope i dont

still will love the products thereof but the system and collaborators and perpetrators – i love ya enuf to tell ya not cool, not cool

ya basta

ohhh and thanks Jeffrey – u got me all emotional and i aint even had my cup of joe yet

peace and LOVE

You got it right. Right is right, wrong is wrong. There is no around to it!

Catherine Murphy — do the right thing. Take it back!

I think this blog needs to be SENT to Catherine herself, and ask that she reads and RESPONDS to it so we know she actually READ it with those eyes that seem to be blind to us.

My reason for not including my usual copyright disclaimer in my comment that I posted yesterday is simply because it contains an expression that I quoted from an article whose copyright is owned by Gallaudet University. To ensure that people do not mistake the first sentence of the article as my own and to prevent any confusion between the public domain and copyright, I did not include my copyright disclaimer.

Ms. Catherine Murphy was kind enough to answer my inquiry even though she was under no absolute obligation to do so. She was cordial in her email and I do not and will not doubt and question her sincerity in her reply to my email.

Even if the word “deaf” or “Deaf” is listed first in the list of different kinds, it still does not solve the problem. Why are the native signers mentioned before the new signers? Does this mean anything? Does it mean that native signers are preferred over the new signers? Not necessarily so. Why are some other kinds omitted from the list such as oralists, hard-of-hearing, late-deafened, cuers, cochlear implant users, and so on? Does not mentioning these people mean anything? Does this mean that the university does not accept them? Not necessarily so. Ms. Murphy already gave me the answer to these questions and I am still very content with her answer.

Others have different opinions and/or perspectives. No problem with them – the beauty of diversity of opinions/perspectives.

    hi joseph

u r very clear in ur comment over in the other thread that u r quoting from Gally’s news release as u have it in quotes and provide the link and say… “the first sentence…”

the news release is public domain material and totally quotable – no copyright concerns there

i have also seen u quote many other sources in ur comments all over the place and have ur “public domain notice” at the end so not sure why u didnt have it this time.

now re: the listing HEARING was listed first. that is what is on the table in this thread, Joseph. You are free to start ur own blog entry asking why other populations or communication methods were not listed first – that is ur prerogative. But here we r discussing what she DID do re: Hearing

You state in public domain you are “still very content with her answer.”

    I ain’t. I ain’t.

And i shant be until “justice runs down like water, and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

i do hope u will take the time to read the full speech by lucy stone re: being a Disappointed woman – it has much bearing on what i am aiming for

re: diversity of thought – yep. Free speech rocks dont it. Its a shame that Catherine Murphy has tried to block free speech and free assembly of Deaf folks who have the “spiritual audacity to assert their somebodyness” (MLK) DHHA, AG Bell denouncing of AFA rally, AG Bell denouncing of Pepsi commercial, DBC interview tih AG Bell president

    peace much,

yep wrong is wrong and right is right

larry fleischer and many other good folks have said “its never the wrong time to do the right thing”

hope she will take it back

i always admire folks when they can admit their mistakes and make right

    much peace

subject Concerns re: ‘no particular reason’

    Greetings Ms. Murphy:

I hope you are well and enjoying your new post at Gallaudet University. There are many concerns about your having been selected for this post over Deaf candidates as many folks desire to have a Deaf spokeperson and also because of your past work at the AG Bell Association and on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Alliance Task Force, where you actively advocated for the exclusion of American Sign Language & portrayed Deaf ASL people as being dependent.

In light of your professional history, it seems to me that it would be beneficial to have some type of commitment or evidence coming from your office that shows you support American Sign Language and that you have an understanding of what audism is and why it is to be challenged.

    https://handeyes.wordpress.com/2011/03/13/no-particular-reason-huh/

Until such a time as you make evident your complete understanding and commitment to Gallaudet’s bilingual-bicultural mission – our concerns will remain.

    Peace,

    Patti Durr

    Patti,

Catherine Murphy’s responce, “no particular reason”, sounds not only insensitive but also very dismissive. Since she is a PUBLIC figure, she is to owe the deaf community an apology. I think you should send a copy of your message to the Board of Trustees since they were amongst the ones who appointed Ms. Murphy.
