this is gonna be me last entry for a bit.  i got a beast project to get D-O-N-E so say some prayers to the techno gods that all will go well and all the bad mojo is gone.  pretty please

yesterday a brilliant and beautiful person stopped by to share a little signed song he made – it is GRAND.  I thank ye Jason for making it and sharing it.  I bow me head at ya cuz “creators” are important keepers of the culture – there is no doubt or never mind about this folks.  (yes i know some will say its debatable but in my book it ain’t and u is at patti’s place so no like – “walk on by…”) and cuz yesterday before this present was dropped in our laps i had gone to see the MLK celebration and Nikki Giovani was there – oh she is a kick butt African-American poet.  she rocks and she rolled and she had me in tears!  and the man concluding the celebration mentioned how the role of artists is “to disturb the peace” (James Baldwin) – false peace that is.  and i said Amen.  and this is what thee beast project is all about so we gotta get it out the door for all to see see.

now about this Firework video by Jason Listman – i dont know if to him it has any Deaf related significance beyond him being Deaf, a lover of ASL literature, and a creator but me think – it fits perfectly to what i been thinking about our Deaf ASL world lately.  About the need to “have the spiritual audacity to assert our somebodyness” (MLK) & how “A man who stands for nothing will fall for anything” (Malcolm X) & how “A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave.” (Gandhi) & “Why do you pick on us?” (Rosa Parks to James Blake, the White bus driver)

1. gally is not the center of the universe even though it is the Deaf mecca and it is to Deaf folks what Israel is to Jewish folks (thank u gloria farr for that analogy)

2. focusing on the “professionals” and not the children when the KIDDIES are the target of the greatest disaffection is not wise just or good

3. linguistic, cultural, and true biz genocides – ALWAYS target the children and the next generation

this is what dear ole george had to say on the subject

So here i dont think George Veditz was talking about Deaf as a handicapping condition – he was just talking about it as part of the human conditions we got walking this planet – as in variation as i biodiversity.  George was a thinking chap chappy and i adore him.  So here he makes this astute observation that it is the SCHOOLS that shape the Deaf children.

parents / family

schools / teachers etc

peers / friends and foes

work place / coworkers and boss

mass media

so with THE DEAF – families aint always the chief passer oners of the culture – infact the latests is that only 5% come from Deaf parents and many of those Deaf parents have not been schooled in their own language and culture properly – many of them came late to the party too sooooooooo

the SCHOOLS ruled – they were the chief architects of the culture and the language – not via the classroom so much but just via the space – ahhhh Deaf space not by design but more so by critical mass and necessity

this is how the language SURVIVED despite and inspite of the fact that most of the schools went oral / aural only for an EXTENDED period of time – even the original bi-bi school ASD went oral / aural only.  Kids signed on the sly.

and even when no sign language reached these kids they still managed to be People of the Eye – searching for a gesture, a look, a wink, a hope, a prayer, a care

Watch some of those CI videos some of those speech lesson youtubes and u will almost always see “a look” a “searching” a “scanning for data” from the hungry eyes of the child

u will often also see a gesture, a clue, a hint, a head nod from the AVT expert

oh and smile pretty for the camera while we whack ur hand for doing that which comes natural to them – ie THE hand babble

and heye when did “THE SIGN LANGUAGE” get demoted to being “manualism” and then to “a communication mode” or a “modality”

and when did “mute” as in “Deaf-mute” as in “Semi-mute” get tossed

the schools that are disappearing before our very eyes

it aint purely:

1. economics – cuz educating Deaf children as isolated beings all across the US of A when they require interpreters and CART and audtiory this and that is not cheap – not cheap at all

2. proximity – cuz sending kids away to schools, while difficult for many parents to do and something i would not choose (id move close to the school so me kid could be a day schooler), is not really an issue when for privileged families its considered prestigious and desirable to send ur kids to a boarding school

3. quality – cuz mainstreaming has been around for a mighty long time now and they aint faring no better than the so called “left behind ones” that got “dumped in the Deaf schools”

nah – the motivator appears to be very similar to what it was in AG Bell (the man’s day) – to keep the Deaf away from each other

cuz where there be 2 – there be a meeting and the potential for some organizing and some potential for the “spiritual audacity to assert their somebodyness” and we cant be having that now can we

ask urselves why was it illegal to educate a Slave – to teach ’em to read and write?

that some schools do BAN signing – hello oral deaf education and “option” school have u seen the UN’s convention on the rights of Disabled People and the ICED 2010 New Era Agreement, where they ruled that excluding Sign Language from a Deaf child’s life to be not cool??

it truly is

RIT launched its RADSCC (i know i know it was a long time a coming and its a mighty long name. i woulda preferred sooner and shorter – something like the Veditz Center but often folks dont take me suggestion until many moons late – its ok i got patience) and im good at seeing what is good and RADSCC is good

so i say it is RAD to me so ill just call it that The RAD center

what does it stand for?  RADSCC =  RIT ASL & Deaf Studies Community Center

So the RADSCC is rad cuz….

and cuz PAH! (translation: “finally”) – over two scores and its here

– its a beautiful space – all glass walls so u can see in and out

– up on the 2nd floor clearly visible and not down in the dungeon like the poor ole RIT Women’s center and some of the other centers

– its got a balcony for lunch chats – yes we were all lusting after the idea of being able to SIT OUTSIDE for a chat (brrr rochester)

– its got the awesome banner using a detail of Deaf artist, Nancy Rourke’s artwork

– its got Jeanne Behm – she is the coordinator of the center and already glows with delight that it exists and makes u feel so welcome u dont mind braving the blustering breeze of the 1/4 mile to make ur way to the rad space and when u come in she greets u like “we have been saving a place for u”

so nice

– its got the support of the president of RIT, the president of NTID, the president of the student government and the NSC and ASLIE and DCCS and ….. u name it

aint life grand

me so happy

how did it come to be?  well i think largely it is a result of some Hearing students saying to the RIT Student Government a few years ago – we’d like some more ASL classes here – ya know since this is the “Grand Experiment” (NTID & RIT together, N T I D and R I T together, we shall overcome some day…..) it would be nice if more of us could talk with our Deaf classmates etc and bingo the administration makes it so

the RIT Hearing administration says – let there be light and more ASL classes and there are and they are FULL to the brim

and folks say – wouldnt it be nice if there was a literal middle ground instead of building 14 out on the outskirt of the RIT town and LBJ on the other outer edge looking like ghettos to some lets put a place in the middle – symbolic and functional at the same time – COOL.

and again it was a Hearing administrator – interim NTID president, Dr. Jim DeCaro who said …. make it so

and the RADSCC planning committee got busy – picking furniture, examining blue prints, organizing and implementing and presto …. the rad RADSCC is born

and folks r saying – Geez what took us so long to do this

but im glad its here

and im glad i was there to witness it

and in case u r wondering – yep i know some of u love to wonder about me – why is it that i emphasized Hearing this and Hearing that is cuz there is an irony and a blessing there folks

it is cuz sometimes Deaf folks feel so limited by “the systems” that we give up before we even start trying and every once and a while some good souls who have positions of privilege wander by and tap that peanut butter jar lid at exactly the right moment and the right place and presto it opens

and then the Deaf folks around them say WOW and let there be LIGHT and dang and cool

and of course there are some folks scoffing thinking its too little too late

oh please folks lighten up and stop raining on the parade

it is a good thing.  Hearing students have been learning ASL on this campus since we got here in 1968, we are just making it easier and better for ’em and in the process the Deaf students r gonna be rocking and celebrating and loving up themselves, their culture and language too

so start investing in hope

According to a few articles – a study conducted at RIT found that Deaf students (77%) reported a higher rate of maltreatment as children than Hearing students (49%)

“Maltreatment was defined as physical or sexual abuse, physical neglect, emotional neglect or emotional abuse.”

I have seen reports of this kind in the past – that disenfranchised children often experience higher rates of maltreatment because they are more vulnerable and have less resources to seek recourse.

I know of several Deaf survivors of childhood abuse who have told me they were specifically selected / targeted because they were Deaf.

Not cool folks.  Not cool.

The articles don’t go into details about the study – how it was conducted, how the subjects were selected, etc.  The study is important so I hope to be able to read it in full some day soon because presently i have more questions than answers from the write up and because the topic is very important and merits our attention and our heart.

Independence???

I’ve been wondering about the AG Bell Association’s motto of “Independence through Listening and Talking!”

Is this false advertising?

I’m just wondering.

Cuz not all of the folks who follow the AG Bell method (see the AG Bell academy and AVT) end up being able the hear and speak and cuz even those who do still dont always seem that “independent”

Seems sometimes a mighty lot of lots of stuff gets put upon the child to gain that wee measure of “independence” and then ya gotta ask – how truly independent is it if ya have to depend on all of these accessories and services and systems and …. once u have done all that, you still get passed over in the school yard, job interview, and dinner table.  The output might be “intelligible” but the input tends to betray and so they often stray

And then there is the question about the folks who do not hear or speak – what of them?

Are they dependent?  Is the flip side of AG Bell’s mantra “Dependence through seeing and signing”?

Are the handeyes kids regulated to being children of a lesser G-d for ever and ever more?

Wait eyes see them driving and signing (and one bloke is even vlogging too) at the same time – dependent?

Merry Martin Day “… as thy self”

Happy Merry Martin Luther King, Jr Day

Martin was born on Jan 15, 1929 but monday is the national holiday.  Wasn’t easy to get this national holiday and some states still kinda thumb their nose at it but im mighty glad we got it cuz MLK Jr is me hero.

many a days i say “what would martin do?” and the answer always comes back – LOVE.  And sometimes the answer is be firm with love but never forget the love part.

Martin was born in 1929 – the same year as Anne Frank – another one of my heroes.  A wee thing living in a horrendously unjust time refusing to give up hope in humanity.  She A-M-O-S-T made it in hiding until the liberation of Holland but the family was betrayed and sent to concentration camps where she A-L-M-O-S-T made it again but then died from typhus.

The true cause of her death was HATRED.

She was 16 years old.

Dear Anne lived on in her words.  Her diary has been translated into many languages and is read all over the world and while some will still say it is fabricated and the Holocaust is a hoax – we all know better because Anne did not lie.

“Never forget that everything Hitler did in Germany was legal.” – MLK Jr

Martin was born the same year as Anne and lived a bit longer but died of the same UNnatural cause.  He had numerous threats against his life and his family.  His wife and daughter were A-L-M-O-S-T killed when someone bombed their home, Martin A-L-M-O-S-T died when he was stabbed and finally a bullet stopped his heart but not his dream.

The true cause of his death was HATRED.

He was 39 years old.

Dearest Martin lives on in his words.  His speeches and pearls of wisdom are clung to on a daily basis.  His actions and deeds are revered and aspired to.  His dream is becoming more and more self-evident and while some may say the power of love is false or lame – we know better because Martin did not lie.

I have been reflecting a great deal on our Judeo-Christian tradition and many other world religions and philosophies and it always comes back to LOVE “loving thy neighbor even if they be our enemy as we love ourselves” and i have wondered that perhaps the root of our problem with civility and our current culture of violence may be not just that we do not heed the first part of this message but that we are lacking in the 2nd part of it which must truly come first.  I ask this because i know that when i am lacking in self-love then i do not challenge with love but rather with bitterness or i just avert my eyes to bad things or just go selfish etc

Martin, Malcolm, Anne, Gandhi, Jesus, Leviticus and many others knew we must love ourselves first and foremost – not in a vain and selfish way but in a way that we know there is a greater good we should be contributing too, in a way that our conscience sings, a way in which our heart hears and heyes and then we can truly love thy neighbor and thy enemy and engage in direct confrontation from LOVE when and if needed and spend all the rest of the time just being happy and marveling at how wonderful this world can be with us in it.

oh, and be merry!
