subject A message from Senator Charles E. Schumer

Dear Mrs. Durr:
Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition to “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” I agree that Congress should repeal this discriminatory policy and allow gay soldiers to serve openly in the armed services.
As you know, in March, Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut introduced repeal legislation, the Military Readiness Enhancement Act (S.3065), which I proudly cosponsor. This legislation reflects the growing consensus that now exists among the top uniformed leaders of our armed services that repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” is in our nation’s best interest. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Mullen testified in favor of repeal before the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) in February. He argued that it is wrong to force young men and women to “lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens.” Defense Secretary Robert Gates and General David Petraeus also support repeal. In May, both SASC and the House of Representatives approved a Defense Authorization bill that includes repeal, pending the results of an implementation study by the Department of Defense.
The day is coming when repeal is fully implemented and every patriotic New Yorker can serve in the military with dignity. While there is still a long way to go in the struggle for equality, it is heartening to see the nation moving closer to the values that you and I hold as fundamental.
Thank you again for contacting me on this important issue. Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future if I may be of assistance on this, or any other, issue.
Charles E. Schumer
United States Senator

Hi Goldie — could you reformat the post to get it to fit in, because it’s fairly obvious the last part of all sentences are cut off?
