Carl Schroeder’s ASL Letter to PURPLE

Reprinted here with permission

From Carl’s youtube description:
Carl Schroeder discusses that we have engaged in a serious and sustained public discussion of our being deaf, our language, our culture: Deafhood, Audism, DBC, AFA and DHC. Although DVTV and DeafRead editors announced that the Purple icon was removed from their web site, they plan to put it back. We need to know what standing or position statement Purple has on hate speech on being deaf, ASL, Deaf cuture….

subject Sponsoring Audism

Greetings…

On behalf of the members of Audism Free America and others in the community who value a Deaf community of integrity, we would like to formally request that your organization withdraw its support of Deaf Read and DVTV. As an organization that is committed to unmasking audism, combating media misrepresentation and ensuring the human/linguistic rights of future generations of Deaf children, we cannot turn our heads on what is happening in Deaf Read and DVTV.

Purple cannot afford to sponsor websites which allow slanderous and vicious attacks against members of the Deaf community, and particularly if those websites are run by other Deaf people. This is dysconscious audism of the worst kind: horizontal violence.

Hastle states that horizontal violence is non physical inter group conflict and is manifested in overt and covert behaviours of hostility (Freire 1972; Duffy 1995). It is behaviour associated with oppressed
groups and can occur in any arena where there are unequal power relations, and one group’s self expression and autonomy is controlled by forces with greater prestige, power and status than themselves (Harcombe 1999). It is, generally, psychologically, emotionally and spiritually damaging behaviour and can have devastating long term effects on the recipients (Wilkie 1996)

Clearly, Deaf Read and DVTV have published blogs and vlogs which communicate hostility toward targeted individuals and organizations. With your continued sponsorship, PURPLE is complict and endorsing such behavior.

We urge Deaf Read and DVTV to reexamine how best to provide our community with a ‘safe place’ in which to foster healthy disagreements and discussions free of horizontal violence, audism, sexism, heterosexism and racism. In this way, Deaf Read and DVTV can become models for future Deaf bloggers/vloggers and use their power to promote a Deaf community where we are all valued and respected. Until then, we urge PURPLE to reconsider this sponsorship and be business which prides itself on ethical behavior for the good of the individuals in the community you serve.

Let Freedom Roll,

AFA

Barb Digi Cuts off Ties with DeafRead

Reprinted here with permission

One of my basil plants harbored a worm or two. It became necessary to cut off the branch just like I have decided to cut off ties with DeafRead so that the whole plant can continue to grow and prosper into a healthy discourse with respect of ASL advocates who are true to the Deaf vlogosphere community.

We no longer need to tolerate DeafRead editors’ poor judgment that they have neglected to monitor against those who attack the others especially those who have wormed their way to their workplaces. I was a victim of that kind of practice in DR in the past but decided to give them a benefit of doubt knowing they are “human” editors. Now, seeing this happening to someone else was like de ja vu all over again that made me feel sick in the stomach. Although I b/vlogged a lot less at DR in the past few years, it is time for me to officially announce that I am leaving DeafRead from today. Thank you.

DR & DVTV go purpleLESS – ya hoo now do do?

short vlog explaining that PURPLE has pulled its ads from DeafRead and DVTV. Good work – kudos – big hand waves. Thanks to PURPLE for doing the right thing. Thanks to all of you for creating ASL and/or English lettes and sending them to PURPLE. Also thanks if you signed the petition. The owner and operator of DR / DVTV in a short vlog released tonight explained that PURPLE requested the ads be pulled. In a week the ads would go up with a disclaimer. It is not clear what that disclaimer means and we have asked PURPLE for an official response about the “disclaimer.” In the meantime keep signing the petition and sending letters to PURPLE – can be thank you and say no to any disclaimer or thank you for pulling the ads. Please do not sponsor DR/DVTV until it complies with its own guidelines not to post or list v/blogs that attack people based on their being gay or lesbian, religion, gender, or being Deaf ASL people etc. A disclaimer will not do.

Thank you to PURPLE and QQ re: disclaimer

Short vlog to PURPLE communications thanking them for removing their ads from DeafRead and DVTV. Thank you for listening and responding to the concerns and valid points raised by the Deaf community in regards to how the postings and listings by DR and DVTV contradict PURPLE’s mission. The owner and operator of DR and DVTV just released a short vlog saying that PURPLE has asked DR / DVTV to remove their PURPLE ads from DR and DVTV and the owner / operator of DR/DVTV said in a week the ads will go back up with a disclaimer. We are seeking clarification from PURPLE what is meant by a disclaimer with their ads.

Ladies and Gentlemen at Purple’s,
Please consider withdrawing your grants and sponsorship for DeafRead and DeafVideo.tv. FOMDI too.
You did the right thing for AB2072, also please do the right thing by not granting any funds in a place where they are not effectively used. DR and DVTV promotes hatred messages, not Deaf friendly sites, ignore al lthreats on harassment, cyberbullying, cyberstalking.
DR and DVTV fail to comply WEB 2.0 Standard Policy. Please feel free to ask me for copy of videos, emails and letters where unnecessary actions were taken at DR and DVTV.
If you choose to ignore our voice then you are not doing the right thing. Thank you.
Michelle
